Recently, I had the opportunity to dine at Matt Horn’s new Oakland restaurant, “Matty’s Old Fashioned,” and while the experience showed potential, it left me wanting more.
Located in the heart of Oakland, Matty’s Old Fashioned exudes a charming ambiance with its rustic decor and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant’s theme revolves around nostalgia, evoking memories of simpler times. It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into the interior design, creating a warm and welcoming space for diners.
Upon entering, I was greeted by friendly staff who promptly seated me at my table. The menu, which primarily focuses on classic comfort food, caught my attention. It featured a range of dishes that pay homage to traditional American cuisine, each with a unique twist crafted by Matt Horn.
For appetizers, I opted for the “Heritage Wings,” which were praised by many online reviews. The wings were indeed flavorful and had a delightful crunch, but I couldn’t help but wish for a more extensive selection of starters. It seemed like there was a missed opportunity to showcase a variety of Horn’s culinary talents.
Moving on to the main course, I ordered the restaurant’s namesake dish, “Matty’s Old Fashioned Burger.” The burger featured a high-quality beef patty, perfectly cooked and topped with a secret sauce, lettuce, cheese, and pickles, all sandwiched between a fluffy brioche bun. While the burger was enjoyable, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the flavor profile fell somewhat short of the hype surrounding the restaurant.
The service throughout the meal was attentive and professional, with staff members frequently checking in to ensure a pleasant dining experience. I was also impressed by the beverage selection, which included an array of classic cocktails and locally sourced craft beers.
The highlight of the evening was undeniably the dessert. The “Grandma’s Apple Pie” was a delectable treat that oozed with traditional flavors, evoking feelings of comfort and nostalgia. It was the perfect ending to the meal.
Although my experience at Matty’s Old Fashioned was enjoyable, it left me with a sense of unfulfilled potential. While the restaurant showcases Matt Horn’s dedication to classic American cuisine, I would have loved to see more innovative and diverse options on the menu. Additionally, some dishes, while well-executed, lacked the wow factor that sets remarkable restaurants apart from the rest.
